Soil-borne Pathogens

Soil-borne Pathogens

Soil-borne plant pathogen testing is a crucial procedure in agriculture and horticulture aimed at identifying and managing diseases caused by pathogens that reside in the soil. These pathogens include various types of fungi and bacteria that can infect plants at their root systems, leading to diminished growth, decreased yields, and even crop failure if left unmanaged. The testing process typically involves several key steps:

  1. Graphs, data analysis, and personalized recommendations with organic or conventional amendments.
  2. A 15-minute phone consultation with one of our soil scientists.

Pathogen Extraction: Various techniques are employed to extract pathogens from the soil samples. This can include methods such as dilution plating, baiting, selective media culture, or molecular techniques like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify and detect specific pathogen DNA.

Pathogen Identification: Once extracted, the pathogens are identified using a combination of techniques. This may involve microscopic examination of spores, culturing on specific media to observe colony morphology, biochemical tests, or molecular methods for species-specific identification.

Soil-borne plant pathogen testing is essential for proactive disease management, helping growers implement targeted strategies to protect their crops and ensure sustainable agricultural practices. By accurately identifying pathogens early in the growing season, farmers can make informed decisions to minimize the impact of diseases and optimize crop health and productivity.
